Jalandhar: The Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Government of India, Shri Prakash Javadekar will inaugurate annual conference ‘Share the Vision’ and ‘Tri-Colour Unity Walk’ at Lovely Professional University (LPU) on 26 December 2016. Based on LPU Human Capital of 4000+ faculty and staff members, record one kilo-meter long three-coloured seven rows of walking human beings will hold a vibrant respect for the National Flag. Hon’ble Minister will also chair opening session of simultaneously going two-day 15^th Annual Conference ‘Share the Vision’ of LPU.  The theme of the conference is ‘Celebrating Togetherness’, where Mr Minister will bestow 15 years’ service award upon LPU employees who have been rendering their services to the university since its inception.

It is the maiden visit of Hon’ble Minister to the area which is certainly going to magnify the dimensions of the celebration. Active in politics since his college days, Mr Javadekar has held many prestigious positions in Indian Government, national committees and boards. He has been honoured with various national awards. He has also authored many books on social issues including problem of unemployment, infiltration, loan waiver, inflation and other political issues. A visitor of almost all top cities of different continents, he has also presented over 300 articles in various newspapers on contemporary subjects. LPU staff members will really be enthralled on having him amid them all.

Historic All India Inter University ‘Tug of War’ Championship 2016-17 inaugurated at LPU

• 40 Universities from across India have registered to compete for the oldest game of the world 

Jalandhar: After successful conduction of Association of Indian Universities’ (AIU’s) many sports & cultural events at Lovely Professional University (LPU); it is once again historic for LPU when first ever All India Inter University Tug of War (Men & Women) Championship (2016-17) is inaugurated at its campus today. More than 40 universities from all across India have registered for this seven-day championship to participate in five categories of the championship. Of these championship games, two games each will be indoor & outdoor for both men and women and one outdoor game will be of men and women mixed teams, under different weight categories. 14 technical experts, observers and referees are appointed for smooth conduction of the championship. Being conducted by Tug of War (TWFI) Federation of India, the tournament will continue up to 26th December 2016.

First show-game was held between the teams of Guru Gobind Singh Indra Prasth University New Delhi and Punjabi University Patiala. Prior to this, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal declared open the historic championship, and also hoisted the flags of organizer AIU and host LPU at the sports venue. In fact, Tug of war is a sport that puts two teams against each other in a test of strength. Each team pulls on opposite ends of a rope, to bring the rope on its side against the force of the opposing team's pull.

Congratulating all sports persons, team managers, coaches and authorities of AIU & TWFI for including the ancient game of India in the sports events of AIU, Chancellor Mr Mittal informed: “It is indeed a matter of pride for us to host one of the oldest games of the world at our campus. This game of strength used to be a part of Olympic Games from 1900 to 1920. A hard try has since then been going on to get it included in Olympics once again. You all are fortunate to participate in this historic opening of the game, and hopefully you can also be the first participants in the possible Olympic Games-2024 for Tug of War.” Mr Mittal added: “We always want to organize all types of events, as entrusted upon us in diverse fields, for the benefit of students in common. A few days back, LPU also came forward to organize the first ever Qwwali competition of AIU.” 

Chairman of the Technical Committee of the championship, Mr Madan Mohan shared that many international and national federations are adopting this game and is very popular among sportsmen-women as it is combination of both techniques and power where practice is much needed.

Jalandhar: Perhaps Lovely Professional University (LPU) is among the few universities in India, students of which are not affected at all through Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetization step. The reason is that LPU students are already living a cashless, paperless and almost online campus life. Students express that through its foresightedness and being innovative and high-technology oriented; LPU is following almost all online payment procedures for the last 4 to 5 years, and through ‘PayTM’ for 1 to 2 years. Following the demonetization announcement, long queues were seen and still can be seen outside banks and ATMs for exchanging, depositing old currency and withdrawing new currency notes. However, LPU students never had hassles as they pay their fees online, make payments to vendors even of small amount, say of Rs 10, by using Paytm.

Moreover, for LPU students’ day to day small expenses, students need little amount in cash which 58+ ATMs and 5 national and private banks at the campus, along with post office, are sufficient to cater to their needs. LPU has online fee management system through wide service options. Students can use ATM, Debit/Credit Cards and also Net Banking with no convenience charges. LPU has internet partner gateways with PayTM, PayU, Karur Vaisya Bank, ICICI, HDFC and more.  Visualizing this smoothness, it is now being cherished all around that other universities & institutions should take LPU as an example in this context.

LPU students also hold that Indian government is endeavouring to guide all and sundry towards digital transactions so that there should not be any point left for unaccounted money.  On these lines, enthusiastic LPU NSS students are also volunteering in educating non technical people as how to go for cashless transactions in easy ways. So, LPU students are eager to see a total cashless Indian society existing in a safer and secure environment. Some of the activities undertaken by LPU-NSS students under government projects are: Bank queues awareness; Class IV Awareness Campaign; Presentation regarding cashless society; and, more. Volunteers are also ready to bring digital village awareness during their NSS Camps in adopted villages.

LPU students share: “We want this solid phase of demonetization should accelerate a move towards digital financial economy where every single credit/debit transaction will be made through mobile phones or through other modes as we are enjoying now. That time is fast approaching when even ATMs, debit and credits cards will also become outmoded leaving space to digital transactions only. The need of the hour is to learn such types of transactions, including e-wallet, as soon as possible” One of the LPU MBA students Rahul Sharma, who hails from New Delhi, says: “If last date to pay the fee is at hand, or a situation is like “note bandi” and we are running low on time, there are no worries. Such easy, fast and secure facilities are there at the immediate help to go through online transaction.” Another student Chintamani from Hyderabad shares: “At LPU, one has not to wait in long queues or stand for hours to deposit fees, instead go for online transaction or “Paytm Karo” from the comfort of anywhere, anytime.”

LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal shares: “In this current cash flow deficit period in the country, our students are feeling relaxed above all. Whether international or national, all students at LPU have greeted PM Modi’s movement of demonetisation on positive notes.” Mr Mittal also shared: “This trend is certainly heading in the right direction if movement is towards a cashless economy. However, the speed of technological development makes many fear cyber-attacks on making digital transactions. For this, I personally feel that companies, customers, and the government should collectively participate and share responsibility to control cyber-attacks through wide awakening. Companies should increase awareness among their customers of the risks, and educate them on ways to secure themselves.”

LPU organized three day Workshop on ‘Gamification’

Jalandhar: Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) of Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized three-day Workshop on ‘Gamification’. The workshop witnessed enthusiastic participation from both corporate and academic sectors. Proceedings of the workshop were also live streamed in various top institutions for higher education including IIM Kozhikode, IIM Visakhapatnam, SP Jain School of Management (Mumbai), Sharda University (New Delhi) and many more. The workshop proved to be a complete insight into designing a ‘Gamification’ framework. It was intended to highlight the design, system, structure and finally the futuristic vision of application of Gamification.

Workshop forwarded that gamification is the application of typical elements of game playing, including point scoring, competition with others and more. These elements are applied to other areas of activities, like an online marketing technique to encourage engagement with a product or service. So, it can be further elaborated as the application of game-design elements and game principles in the non-game contexts to improve user engagement, organizational productivity, flow, learning, evaluation and more. Thus, Gamification can also improve an individual's ability to comprehend digital content and understand a certain area of work. Presently, ‘Gamification’ has become an integral part of one’s life, irrespective of segment or strata one belongs to. It helps organizations to engage their task force in best possible way for enhancing their efficiency and adding a thrill & enjoyment to the work.

Executive Dean at Faculty of Technology and Sciences of LPU, Prof (Dr) Lovi Raj Gupta was the resource person, who maintained an energetic environment during the workshop. Dr Gupta explained in practical form what all is ‘Gamification’, why it is valuable, how it is applied, and where all it can be functional. Explaining in details what are prevalent applications and trends, the workshop underlined ability to implement the design thinking for almost anything. Presenting a unique pedagogy combined with instructor led interactions, Dr Gupta drew vibrant attention of the participants through on the spot activities and a master project presentation by each participant. Thus, the workshop stimulated self-learning amongst participants.

Illustrative, HRD Centre at LPU is committed to provide excellent training opportunities to LPU faculty & staff members as a whole and entire teaching community in general. The primary focus is to bridge the industry-academia gap and lay a strong foundation of job readiness for students. Such development programs are sure to update and upgrade teachers who in turn are to shape their students as per global needs.  Prior to this workshop, HRD Centre had also organized another two day ‘workshop on school mental health’ for faculty members, students, psychologists and special educators from all over the region. Consultant Clinical Psychologist, at Max Health Care, Delhi and Director at Psychological Academic Learning Services for Children & Adults (PALS) Dr Deepali Batra was invited as the Resource Person.

MA Students of LPU presented Top Theatrical Productions

• LPU students presented two theatrical performances for ‘Aadhe Adhure’ and 'Paanch Rang'
• Student-Audience learnt messages from varied social situations of sensitivity & sensibility enacted at LPU Stage

Jalandhar: The Department of Performing Arts (Theatre & Television) of Lovely Professional University organized two-day theatre event 'Sangmanch' at Shanti Devi Mittal Auditorium of the University. LPU students of MA I & II years and BA III year of the department presented two top theatrical productions ‘Aadhe Adhure’ and 'Paanch Rang', which catered to varied social situations of sensitivity & sensibility. All student- characters made themselves in the shoes of their theatre characters. Student-audience also learnt a lot through the message oriented different stories enacted at the LPU stage. The plays were directed by International & National Film Awardee LPU Professor Mrs. Baljinder Kaur Sharma an NSD alumina. The plays were supported by good set designs and lighting which made it easier to connect the characters with the themes presented. LPU Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal congratulated the hard working teachers and students of performing arts.

All time classic play ‘Aadhe Adhure’ is written by famous playwright Mohan Rakesh, which was first performed over 40 years ago. Under the direction of Professor at LPU Mrs Baljinder Kaur and performed by LPU students, the presentation still appeared ahead of its times.  The play depicted five-member family caught in a cruel net of hardships. The hero is a broken man and the heroine with her own aspirations and desires. The failed hero has more trouble in the family with his children also. The story unfolds on a meticulously designed set where the problems are as indefinable to understand as the solutions. The members of the family are in a state of continuous emotional turmoil. For the entire duration of the play, one crisis moves the plot to the next one. The underlying causes emerge during the last stages of the play.

Under ‘Paanch Rang’ different message oriented stories were presented where a doctor is seen on positive notes with his/her patients. Patients are always assured by doctors to get relief soon however serious the disease may be, and these pleasing words most of the times deem fit. In one other story, it was befittingly revealed how copying his father the son gets addicted to intoxicants. It taught all parents to be role-models for their children instead of projecting ill-habits before them. Still another story presented how an orphan girl absorbs wickedness around her. However, instead of adopting and nourishing her well during her childhood, the society curses her for her negativity instead of realizing its responsibility.

Australian Scientist guided LPU Students on Emerging Technologies

Jalandhar: The School of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) of Lovely Professional University (LPU) organized two-day international conference on ‘Intelligent Circuits and Systems (ICICS 2016) at LPU Campus.

The aim was to provide an exceptional platform to academic, research and industrial communities to gain awareness about emerging technologies in the area of electronics. Renowned Australian Scientist Prof (Dr.) Charles Malpas from University of Melbourne, Australia, urged LPU students and other participants to use the knowledge of science for the betterment of society. Prof Malpas guided them on emerging technologies and research.

During the massive proceedings of the conference, emphasis was laid on the active participation of young minds in the active research and their application in day to day life. One of the conclusion was that through these endeavors a common man can be benefitted maximum through the proper utilization of science. Welcoming the Australian scientist at the campus, LPU Chancellor Mr. Ashok Mittal congratulated all participants, organizing team and students for bringing research findings for the common usage of the society. Mr. Mittal also thanked all advisers from international, national and corporate sectors, including the scientists from the universities of the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Italy, Iran, institutions of India like IITs, NITs, DRDO, CSIO, CSIR and more who from time to time kept on guiding the proceedings of the conference.

One of the interesting papers presented ‘IoT: Pillars And Technology’ was much related to the present time which clearly indicated to all and sundry that IoT (Internet of Things) deployment is increasing. As many as 50 billion devices and objects could be connected to the internet for extraordinary opportunities by 2020. As soon as one gets connected, the next topic that customers think about is whether it is secure or not. The scientists are working hugely on different pillars including Network Connectivity, Computing, Security, Data Analytics and more to unify cyber and physical security to deliver all kinds of operational benefits.

With a great participation of delegates from academia and industry, the conference proved a huge success where participants presented their individual and collective findings and research works. More than 250 research papers were presented by authors from national and international institutions. These research papers are to be published in Scopus indexed reputed international journals.

Chief Electoral Officer (Punjab) launched SVEEP Web Portal ‘sveeppunjab.in’ at LPU Campus

Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab (CEO Pb), Shri VK Singh IAS launched the SVEEP (Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation) Portal ‘sveeppunjab.in’ at Lovely Professional University today. CEO (Pb) informed: “SVEEP Portal is a web based application meant to connect all stakeholders of the Election Commission including CEO, District Electoral Officers (DEOs), Nodal Officers for fair conduction of elections in the state. Each stakeholder is assigned one login to access the portal. The aim of the launch is also to inform and educate people about the importance of voting and to promote youth participation.” The Web portal is developed by LPU students and faculty members, who kept in mind young people who will more often access this portal on mobile phones.

Appreciating first generation of Indian immigrants occupying top positions in the political regions of foreign country like Hon’ble Ujjwal Dosanjh and enterprising potentiality of Indian family members of Lovely Group, CEO (Pb), Shri Singh urged all to vote as each and every vote counts. He also informed that SVEEP programme is to educate individuals, particularly youth, about the importance of voting. It is also to see increase and ethical participation in elections through voter registration and turnout.

Former Premier of British Columbia (Canada) Hon’ble Ujjwal Dosanjh was the Chief Guest of the SVEEP Program on Youth Participation in Elections organized at LPU.  To commemorate the occasion, a postal stamp of SVEEP (Punjab) was also released.  The historic launches were shared by Consul General of Canada Mr Christopher Gibbins, Additional CEO (Pb) Sh Sibbin C, Deputy Commissioners (Jalandhar and Kapurthala) Sh Kamal Kishor Yadav IAS & Gurlovleen Singh Sidhu IAS, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Jalandhar) Sh Girish Dayalan and Lovely Group Chairman Mr Ramesh Mittal.  More than 3000 SVEEP Nodal Officers, Campus Ambassadors of Districts of Jalandhar and Kapurthala, Principals, teachers, Spinal Cord injury affected persons, students from LPU and other educational institutions participated in the event. The massive programme conveyed its message effectively to young minds through both educative and entertaining ways. One of the Election Ambassadors, RJ Pak Pak Deepak informed all about importance of voting in an entertaining manner.

Addressing all attendees, Hon’ble Ujjwal Dosanjh informed all about the real role of politics, politicians, voters and appreciated India for freeness of thoughts and expressions it has. He said: “Politics is a noble calling through which by making right decisions we can make our areas great with good projects and better society. So, it is very important for voters to participate in large number to see a government of your choice and dreams. Voting with integrity and sincerity is as sacred as one’s religion. A voter should always feel that if he/she does not vote then a crime is done. For this I encourage you all to go for registration of your being a voter, cast it responsibly and ethically, and make your country greater than before.”
